About the
Heel of the Month Award

"The Heel of the Month Award was started in 1993 to honor one or more THSCC members each month for his/her recent outstanding driving or for recognition of some special or notable action recently performed either within the club or outside of the club."

June Heel(s) of the Month:

For June, we would like to recognize two individuals, both longtime club members and contributors. Recently putting forth great effort to put on our famous Chick School autocross event for many ladies. These two folks helped organize the event, instruct at the event, and even helped to sponsor the event. It was a great success and many ladies improved their autocross skill, so we would like to recognize Jennifer Bedell and Chris Peterson as joint recipients of the Heel of the Month in June! Thank you both very much!

June Update

Greetings from THSCC!

Summer motorsports are in full swing and we have some exciting events coming up. This weekend on June 27th & 28th we will be holding our 11th annual V Foundation for Cancer Research Benefit Autocross. This event is a great tradition within our club, and we are extremely proud that over the years with our charity autocross events we have raised over $50,000 for cancer research. We look forward to continuing the tradition this year, so please join us and enjoy two days of autocross at our favorite Danville Regional Airport. As always, we will have great raffle prizes thanks to our sponsors, with all proceeds from the event going directly to the JImmy V Foundation.

Also, mark your calendars for the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship event at VIR on August 22-23. This is a great spectator event and opportunity to watch some professional racing at a great track. There are some exciting supporting races throughout the weekend as well, so we encourage you to make a weekend of it and bring the entire family. As a special bonus, we are working on some perks for attending THSCC members. Look for these details in the July newsletter and on our club website soon. For more information about the TUDOR event and to buy your tickets, please visit VIRnow.com.

We hope you're having a great summer so far and look forward to seeing you at an event soon! If you have any questions about any of our events as always please don't hesitate to email me at the link below.

Autocross Report

May saw the return of the once-every-other-year-except-when-we-forget tradtition of the all female autocross school we affectionatly (and politically incorrectly) call the "Chick School". Put on by 3 spectacular long time active contributors to THSCC, this event was very well received and much fun was had by all. As in years past, no male instructors or staff were allowed on site. We'd like to take a brief moment to than Chris Peterson, Gwen Habenicht, and Jennifer Bedell for the hard work they put into this, along with the sponsors from the event: Pet's Companion Inn, Atomic Empire, Cline Hall Insurance, and Steps for Recovery.

Following the Chick School was our 4th points event of the year at Danville Regional Airport. Top PAX time for a fendered car went to our own Eric Peterson, pulling out an impressive 8th fastest raw time in an E-street car. STR was a very tight race, the most notable finisher frmo THSCC being Steven Carter, taking home 2nd place in STR. Steven managed to split the codrivers of the famed "Torquemonster" of Michael Licursi, actually beating the car owner, and less than a tenth behind Mike Casino.

The C-street battle continued to be a compelling one to watch, with Lee Williams taking home the win over Matt McGrain, making the season points even more interesting. This is our tightest class, and may come down to participation being a KEY factor given the large number of events on the schedule this year. Karl Shultz continues to learn how to drive his new baby shuttle, and we saw the return of long time members Carl and Emmie Fisher in HS who learned that the class has come a long way from being the Mini dominated class it once was. Young gun Aaron Skolnik continued his domination of that class, holding of Rob Lupella despite the additional 60+ hp that Rob had on board.

D street prepared was an interesting battle between two relatively new members in drastically different cars. Sean Foley pulled out the win in his 2013 Mini Cooper GP over Daniel Owen in his DSP prepared Acura Integra by only .172 seconds. CAM proved to be a battle of Mustangs with a very intriguing entry finishing 3rd, a 1949 Chevy pickup slotting in behind former presidents Rodney Wright and Stephen Westerfield. Aaron Delong and Zach Hill showed up to shake out their Chump Car Integra, and despite a very aggressive classing (SMF) for the car, finished quite well, with Aaron actually taking home 2nd place.

Last, but certainly not least, our novice class had spectacular participation with 17 entries.Chad Culbertson continues his march towards what looks to be a novice year end trophy with a solid 4th place, with Geoff Sutton in 3rd, Cicero Sykes in 2nd despite the rough AS PAX and Garreth Holl takes home the win in the F-street BMW M3. All in all, a smoothly run event with 5 competition runs and great fun had by all.

June means our Jimmy V fundraiser event is coming up, June 27 and 28 in Danville. This will be 2 seperate points events. As usual, it will include our fabulous prize raffles including great stuff from Discount Tire, Flow MINI, Blackforest Industries, Apex Performance, Rush Hour Karting, and many many more. The event is live on MotorsportReg so sign up for a great time. Remember, racing is awesome, and cancer sucks, so help us smash some cones to smash cancer!

Rallycross Report

THSCC held the fourth rallycross of the year at the Wilson Fairgrounds on June 14. The temperature was high and the turnout was low but we had a great time anyway. A few folks left at lunch because of the heat but diehards stayed the entire day.  The Duff guys brought out their Sentra with several cans of spray-paint and a sign that said “Paint this Car”. Kids both young and old had a great time painting it. Kevin Allen and Ray Metts competed for the fast times of the day as usual. Thanks to all who braved the heat to attend and to the folks who setup and broke down including Drew Sheffield and Nathan Miller who drove all the way from the other side of Charlotte; Kevin Allen and Ray Metts who set a fantastic course, Pete Guthrie,  Ricky Beam who drove the THSCC bus and stayed over on Saturday night; and Charlie Guthrie who spent his Sunday evening on the tractor clearing up the ruts that we made during the day.   Our next event will on July 12 at the VIR Euro rally course. We’re expecting a great turnout and a fun event. It’ll be smooth and fast.

Join the fun, THSCC Rallycross!

Track Report

We just finished up our HPDE event at Carolina Motorsports Park, and if you weren't there, you missed a great event. The weather was particularly nice for this time of year in South Carolina, and everyone got plenty of open track time due to somewhat thin run groups. If you have never run CMP before, definitely put it on your list for next year because it is a very fun track, and we want to share the experience with as many folks as possible.

Registration is open for our John Mullis Memorial HPDE in September on VIR Full Course, so sign up early and often and tell your friends! We will also have another 2-hour Kart Enduro on Saturday night as well and there are still team spots open. We do expect both the HPDE and kart enduro to fill up, so be sure to register up early if you plan on attending. We will be doing deferred payment for both events as usual.

If you have any questions about our events or would like more information, please visit our website or email us at the link below.

See you at the track!

April Update

It's still April, barely! We've been busy preparing for and holding great motorsport events, and we hope you've been enjoying yourself and are having a good year so far.

We need your help! As you know, our club relies on a team of volunteer staff and officers to make the events happen. In addition, the Autocross and Rallycross events typically include an Event Chair position (or two) as well. An Event Chair is a member who steps up to help design the course, help with the setup, and test (yes: test it, by driving) the day before the event. They also receive free entry to the event, don't have a work assignment during the event, and get to design the artwork and theme for our famous magnet dash plaque for the event.

If you are interested in being an event chair for a specific event or would like to learn more, please contact the Vice Presidents of the appropriate program, autocross@thscc.com or rallycross@thscc.com. Thank you and thanks to all those who have chaired events so far this year!

Lastly, don't forget our monthly club meetings are the second Wednesday of every month at Randy's Pizza on Miami Blvd. Come out and join us for pizza and comradery!

See you at an event soon.

-Zach Hill, President

Kart Enduros

We held our first Kart Enduro of the year, a 2 hour race at the VIR Kart Track during our HPDE weekend in April. It was well attended, although with one cancellation and no walk-ups we only had 11 teams. The competition was fierce, however, especially with our newly implemented weight classing system.

The Heavy and Light classes are no longer split on a static weight threshold. Instead, all teams weigh in and then are sorted, the top half assigned as Heavy class and the bottom half assigned as Light class. Interestingly, the cutoff weight at this event happened to be right at 191.5 lbs; a team at 191 lbs was classified as Light class, and 192 lbs was classified as Heavy class.

The racing was close throughout the race, with the lead changing several times in both classes. The real nail-biter was in the last few minutes of the 120 minute race, when team Shut Your Pie Hole & Drive was leading the race and team Lexus Took Our Money only a few seconds behind and closing fast. With 4 minutes to go, they completed the pass for the lead, and maintained the position until the end, giving the overall and Light class win by a margin of only 2.151 seconds. And in the 3rd trophy position in Light class was Grim Reaper Racing #1 who snagged the fastest lap of the race, an impressive 46.172. Great racing!

The results were as follows:

Overall Class Team
1st 1st Light Lexus Took Our Money
2nd 2nd Light Shut Your Pie Hole & Drive
3rd 3rd Light Grim Reaper Racing #1 (FTD 46.172)
4th 1st Heavy Squealin Bitches
5th 2nd Heavy 2 Fast, 1 Furious
6th 3rd Heavy Camar-bros

Thanks to all those who competed in this event and congratulations to all the trophy winners!

There are still slots left in the September 2H Kart Enduro so be sure to sign up early to ensure your spot!

Autocross Report

March was another exciting month for the THSCC autocross program. Another awesome weekend up in Danville, this time for our novice school and points event #2. All week long the weather report looked menacing, but everything cleared up in time for a sunny but cold novice school. Around 40 drivers got some excellent instruction and about 10 runs on a timed course as well as many more on an untimed training course. Instructor to student ratio was excellent (THANKS INSTRUCTORS!), and the event was wrapped up at a very reasonable hour. Most people were done in time to get home for dinner.

Points event #2 featured a course that started on the runway and ended on the taxiway, finishing up with a tricky decreasing radius sweeper turn that caught people who didn't look ahead. The course was flowing, fast (3rd gear for some in places) with fastest times in the mid 40's. David Spratte took fastest PAX time in his G-street Focus, and held fastest raw time as well until the fomridable 3rd run group came up. Derek DeLong became the first to overcome the "grocery getter", as David continued to joke about how he didn't even break any eggs or spill any milk on his runs. While he thought he had FTD in hand, Carlton Whitehead went out and blistered the course with a low 45 second time to take the win in STR. He was even able to take a victory lap for his last run, as nobody else was able to catch up. Keith Quistorff showed up in a new (to him) car, and took the win in A-Street by a good margin. Brice Johnson edged out Michael Miller in C-Street by a mere .012 seconds in one or our best attended classes so far this year. Less than 1 second seperated the top 6 places in class there.

E-street was dominated by the MR2 spyder, with Jennifer Bedell returning to her roots and taking the class win over Chris Peterson. Chuck Branscomb returned to action in his 2011 M3 to dominate F-street. STU was the "spec-Regina" class (Regina is Jennifer Vance's name for her M3), with Zach Williams beating our club President for the class win.

Novice class was VERY well attended, with 17 entries. The win went to Jeanne Ferneyhough, with Austin Culbertson close behind. Thanks to our event chairs Zach Williams and Rob Lupella as well as all officers and staff for putting on another great event that even saw time for fun runs afterwards.

Looking toward to May, we have the world famous THSCC Autocross Chick School followed by Points Event #4 on May 16th and 17th! If you are a lady or know any ladies who may be interested in checking out autocross for the first time, or maybe who have tried it and want to get faster, this is a great opportunity for great seat time and excellent instruction. Among the all women instructors will be several SCCA National Champions, so this is an event not to miss. For all the info and to sign up, head over the MotorsportReg Chick School page.

For the guys, there's always the VIR Kart Track just up the road from Danville Airport at VIR if you're looking for some motorsports action while the ladies are autocrossing. And on Sunday, all are welcome for Points Event #4. Sign up and make a weekend of it! We hope to see you there.

Rallycross Report

Non-regular THSCC drivers dominated April’s rallycross at VIR. We had 32 drivers compete with some folks coming all the way from the Charlotte and DC areas. Subarus dominated all-wheel drive categories with a BMW 325i, a Sentra, a Miata and a Mini Cooper S winning their respective classes. Adam Kimmett driving a Subaru Impreza RS in NO4 turned in the top aggregate time of the day.

We ran two different courses. Both were quite challenging, starting open then closing into multiple hairpins toward the end. Charlie and Pete Guthrie did a great job grooming the courses over multiple days before the event.

F & S Enterprises was onsite to photograph our afternoon sessions.   Click here to view photos. The Vintage Drivers Club of America was on track for the weekend so driving through the paddock during lunch was a treat for British car enthusiasts.

March Update

Greetings from THSCC! The year is underway, and it has been COLD in many parts of the state. We hope everyone has been staying warm and safe.

Unfortunately the bad weather has resulted in us having to reschedule our first two events, the Autocross Points Event #1 & Test-n-Tune as well as our Rallycross Points Event #1 & Novice School. Scheduling events this early in the year is always risky, and it didn't quite work out this time. However, we are still on track for events starting in March when things will start to warm up.

The Rallycross Points event will not be rescheduled, however the Rallycross School will be rescheduled for a later date. Keep an eye on our website, MotorsportReg for that event.

We appreciate your understanding and bearing with us with these event postponements and we look forward to seeing you at an event soon!

Autocross Report

autox pic

The Autocross season got of to a delayed start this year, with the original first event planned for February 21st but instead taking place on March 7thinstead. It turned out to be a great call. The original date proved to be freezing temperatures and snow. The new date, although starting below freezing, quickly gave way to sunshine and 50+ degrees temperatures for the opening test and tune event. Different than a traditional points event, the test and tune focus on maximum seat time and no competitive element to the day. We had 50 drivers for the day, split into two run groups and each got a morning and an afternoon heat lasting approximately an hour. The course was a fast, offset intensive course with times in the 45-55 second range for the top drivers. Although we considered a seperate skidpad area instead of just a traditional autocross course, we decided that the condition of the pavement just wasn't up for it. Everyone managed 8-10 runs for the day and we were done and set up for the next days event by 4:30.

Points event #1 got underway the next day and was a reversal of the test and tune courses with some practical changes made at the start and finish for safety reasons. This day featured an opening radius version of the famous Danville sweeper that had people "yee-haw"-ing into a fast slalom down the main runway. After a relatively high speed turnaround element, cars quickly hit the throttle again through some high speed offsets that required courage to stay in the gas. A tight braking zone into the "speed bump" transitioned drivers onto a different surface where grip was a bit less. After a final diagonal slalom and one last sweeper turn, the cars finished, again with times in the 45-55 second range for top drivers. We had 5 competition runs for the day, and 98 drivers.

Top PAX time was taken by David Spratte in his G-Street Focus ST. That looks like a very tough car to beat this year. Justin Barbry and Eric Peterson rounded out the top 3. Lots of people shaking out new to them cars at the event, including Matt McGrain, Brett Murphy, Dick Rasmussen, Lee Williams, and Rob Keehner (in a codrive offered from Steve Spampinato). Our club president brought out the Spec E30 to shake it down. Other notable returns to autocross for the day included Aaron Buckley, Bryan Hertwick, and Karl Shultz. There may have been others, but we were too lazy to investigate further...  :)

As the schedule continues to develop, watch our website andMotorsportReg for events for June, July and August coming shortly. See you there!

Rallycross Report

The first rallycross of the season was held on Sunday, March 22 at the Wilson fairgrounds. The event had 25 attendees. The course was a little moist due to the rains the week before but the day turned out to be great. The weather was cool and the course was fast, producing very little dust. Kevin Allen, topped the field in NO4 and finished first overall in his STI, Quinten Bullock won SO4 in a WRX and Charlie Guthrie, driving his Golf, won SU2. We had quite a few novices driving their first rallycross and a few folks who hadn’t been out lately attend the event. We also had a few folks driving new or different cars/classes than last year. As usual, Charlie stayed late, using the tractor and landscape box to smooth the dirt that we moved around during the day.

Our April rallycross will be held at VIR on Sunday, April 12. It should be a great course layout and be somewhat reminiscent of a rally-sprint, weaving in and out of the tree lines with sections of smooth fast open areas.

In other news, some THSCC folks attended the 2015 NASA Rally Sport Sandblast rally in March including Kevin Allen and Elizabeth Cordara with crewmembers Courtney and Jeremy Gast of RallyCats Moterspurtz, finished 6th overall and won the Open Light class. Sebastian Kokoszka and Gage Gregory of Janko Import Cars finished 26th overall after having difficulties on a couple of the stages. Congratulations to those competing and many thanks to those who volunteered at the event!

Be part of the Fun… THSCC Rallycross.

Next, we will head to Carolina Motorsport Park in Kershaw, SC for another two day HPDE weekend on June 6-7.
Registration: http://msreg.com/THSCCCMP2015

Whether you are a seasoned veteran or it's your first time at the track, it can be difficult to remember all the items you might need at the track. Club member Mike Whitney has compiled a checklist of useful items to bring with you to the track. While you may not need every one of these things (tools/spares) especially your first time, but the more events you attend, the better it is to be prepared in the case that you do. The track community is also a pretty friendly place to be, so if you happen to need something don’t be shy, most folks are glad to help a fellow attendee out.

Be sure to save a copy of the THSCC Track Checklist and reference it when you're heading to the track.

See you at the track!

Website Launch

As discussed over the last, well... forever, we have been attempting to design and deploy a new Website for the Club. We are pleased to formally announce that the new http://www.thscc.com Website is up and running. It passed the test of time and then some. Thank you very much for Carl and Emmie Fisher for devoting so many hours of their time to ensure the Website and Forum were working well and over the years have made many modifications to the site which makes it very special. Although this new site is replacing the original site in its entirety, the original THSCC Web site served us well and will be archived.

Although the new THSCC website is online, it is still considered a work in progress, so you will be seeing new features and content being added and maybe minor visual tweaks here and there once we have tested in our Development environment. We are hoping that with the new platform, it will empower more people to stay involved in the site by creating content such as News Items, Misc Announcements, Schedule Changes (which are always accompanied by an email), and other content that will allow for the site to grow and continue to be dynamic. Officers and designated Staff currently have various forms of access roles and we will continue to add to this, refining

Beyond this, the website has been moved to a new server, which is faster, and has less resource constraints. It is also running much more current releases of key components. We are excited to make this site as usable and interesting as possible. If you want to contribute by supplying feedback, please let us know by emailing webmaster@thscc.com so we can acknowledge your comment or concern, and determine the priority if it requires any action by the team managing the Website.

We have many action items on our plate of tasks to address. Some of these are items such as YouTube Integration, a new Photo Gallery, a new mechanism to view results, and more.

Stay tuned!

-Noah Fleming, THSCC Webmaster

Kart Enduros

Kart Enduro signups are now online! If you haven't been to a THSCC Kart Enduro before, now is your chance. These events are arrive-and-drive, two-hour wheel-to-wheel races that require a minimum of three pit stops complete with driver changes.

The weight classing will be slightly changed this year. There will still be two classes like before, Light and Heavy, but the weight cutoff point will instead be at the halfway point between all teams at weigh-in. This will ensure an equal number of teams competing in each class.

Currently we have two events posted, and they are held on the Saturday evening during the HPDE weekends at VIR. Those participating in HPDE will have time to head over to the Kart track after their on-track driving, and it's a great opportunity for those who have never been on track to come do some wheel-to-wheel racing.

Spots are limited, as the VIR Kart Track only has 12 karts, so thus only 12 team slots are available. Be sure to sign up early!

Also, keep an eye on our website as we may be announcing additional Kart Enduros this year...

Autocross Report

Due to the weather, our first event in Danville was rescheduled to the weekend of March 7-8. We will continue with the existing plan, with a Test-n-Tune event on Saturday and the Points Event #1 on Sunday. Registrations were retained, so if you signed up for the rescheduled event then you are still registered for the new date. If you are unable to attend the new date, please adjust your registration accordingly or contact autocross@thscc.com.

The rest of our schedule is shaping up quickly with additional preregistration pages to be posted soon. For those who are willing to sign up extra early the first four events on MSR are up and open to registrations including the 2015 Chick School and our first event at NCCAR.

Currently we have events through May confirmed with more to come including our return to VMP in August, two more events at NCCAR for our July and September events and this year’s NCAC event at……… ZMax!

As a final note from our staff, we would like to offer the opportunity to anyone in the club who is interested in trying to build a course for our 3rd and 4th Points Events (NCCAR and Danville respectively).  If you are interested or know someone new to the sport who would be interested, email autocross@thscc.com or find the thread on our forums http://thscc.com/forum.

See you all in Danville!

Rallycross Report

The Novice School and the Points Event at Wilson scheduled for Feb 28 and March 1 were canceled due to weather conditions. The surface was too wet to take two days of traffic without damaging the venue. The novice school will be rescheduled, the points event will not be. If you were registered for the event, you were not charged and your registration has been canceled. Watch our website for the rescheduled date for the Rallycross Novice School.

Our next rallycross event at VIR the weekend of April 11 but have not yet determined if we want to hold it on Saturday or Sunday. We've strengthened our presence on Facebook with a new group called North Carolina Rally Cross and by posting our events. We've also reached out to other clubs in the southeast to generate interest. We need folks to video and photograph our sessions in order to provide interesting content for the web.

Be part of the Fun…

(Charles Lankford)

Don’t know who else in club was there……

About the Heel of the Month award:
"The Heel of the Month Award was started in 1993 to honor one or more THSCC members each month for his/her recent outstanding driving or for recognition of some special or notable action recently performed either within the club or outside of the club."

January Heel of the Month:
This month's Heel of the Month award has been awarded to a relatively new member, Tristan McBride. He begun autocrossing last year and took to the sport quickly. Within a few events he was finishing mid-pack in the highly competitive STR class in a borrowed S2000. Tristan also quickly began helping out wherever he could at events, and volunteered to run for Registrar in 2015, where he was subsequently elected. Please join us in congratulating Tristan and thanking him for his commitment to the club!

Don't forget to join us for the monthly Club Meetings on the second Wednesday of every month at Randy's Pizza on Miami Blvd in Durham!

2015 THSCC Staff

Meet your new staff members:

President - Zach Hill

First introduced to motorsports at a THSCC autocross in Laurinburg back in 2007, where despite my unwavering confidence, I DNF'd every run and came in DFL! But most of all, I was astonished that I could drive my car as fast as I could legally and not have to worry about getting a ticket! Instantly hooked, I attended every autocross I could, eventually progressing to HPDE events in 2010, and in 2014 began wheel to wheel racing. 2015 marks my third year proudly representing THSCC as an officer, having previously been a Vice President for the autocross and track programs. As your club President this year, I'm excited for the future of this club and honored to be a part of its leadership as the club enters its 51st year of operation. I'm looking forward to a great year of fun events!

Secretary - Steven Spampinato

My name is Steven Spampinato, I am your club secretary, and I have been autocrossing occasionally since 1996. I have a 2006 Civic SI that is my Kid “Daddys” Taxi on the weekdays and Street Class Racer on the weekends.  I love my lumpy meatball of a FWD sports car.

Registrar - Tristan McBride

I have been to 4 auto-cross events so far. I enjoy every minute of these events, and am now your new registrar!

Timing and Scoring - Carlton Whitehead

I started autocrossing with THSCC in 2006 and has been addicted ever since. When he's not building software to fund his addiction, he might be petting his cat, Tulip, his partner's dog, Gidgett, or building software to make autocrossing more awesome.

RallyCross VP - Charles Lankford

I don’t really know what to say. I’m just an old guy that loves motorsports. I’ve lived in Cary for the last 17 years and recently discovered a love of trying to drive fast. Lacking experience, I joined THSCC to learn from and to share experience with other like-minded individuals.  I’m VP of Rally Cross because no one else was stupid enough to take the job this year….. but someone has to do it. Nothing in life is free

Novice Coordinator - Jennifer Vance

This will be my fourth season with THSCC Autox, and my second participating in the HPDE program.  I love my car and I love THSCC!

Novice Coordinator - Rob Lupella

Been Autocrossing for 14 years. Worked as Novice Coordinator for over 7 of those. Gets a kick out of watching novices improve on each run. Enjoys walks on the beach, fine wine, honesty and puppies. Turn offs include mean people, Chrysler products, and  rain.

AutoCross VP - Brice Johnson

I have been autocrossing with THSCC off and on since 2000. I'm looking forward to a great year for the program with a good variety of sites culminating in hosting the NCAC!

AutoCross VP - Derek DeLong

I have been a member of THSCC since 2013 and a VP of autocross since 2014.  I compete in STR class with a 2006 S2000. I joined THSCC after attending two autocross events as a spectator because of the comradery and friendly competition I saw among all the members and people I meet along the way.

AutoCross VP - Noah Fleming

Noah joined the club in 2008. Since then he has held the staff position of Worker Coordinator in 2011 and 2012, and Autocross VP in 2013,2014, and 2015.

Additionally, in 2015 he has taken on the role of Webmaster, managing the THSCC Website and working to deploy a new, updated site.

He first learned of Autocross from Zach Hill, who belabored him to autocross until he caved, then subsequently became hooked due to the comradery, competitiveness, and general mechanics of the sport.

He will always remember his first autocross in Sandford, NC, when his Novice instructor, Rob Lupella; said to him, "I guess we are going to drive the course backwards!"

Since beginning autocross, he has become involved with Track/HPDE related programs, and Karting. He has driven a Mazda RX8 in CS/STX, Mazda Speed3 in the old "TIR" class, and now runs his 2002 Honda S2000 in STR. His biggest accomplishment was placing 1st in STR class at the 2012 North Carolina Autocross Championship.

He looks forward to the clubs progress and is amazed at how the club has changed in the years for which he has been involved.

"To Motorsport commradery... *Clink*..."

Track VP - Stephen Westerfield

Stephen has been an active member since 2003 participating in autocross and track events. He has been instrumental in the successful operation the HPDE program, continuing the tradition of fun, safe events and providing the highest quality instruction to our students.  Stephen plans to autocross his Mustang this year and also competes in LeMons endurance racing.

Newsletter Editor - Kolu Roth

I started out spectating at autocrosses in 2010 and finally was talked into the challenge of learning to drive an S2000 in 2011. VTEC! I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of becoming a better driver, learning how to handle lots of different situations on the road and just the fun & camaraderie of being part of the THSCC Family.

Mgr. of Business Development - Dustin Fredrickson

Dustin has been a THSCC member since ~2003 and has served 2 terms each as Autocross VP and club President.  For the past few years, Dustin has spent his time behind the scenes managing our Club Sponsorship program, and in his free time is a driver/co-owner in the 'Simon Says' Chumpcar racing team.

AutoCross Report

2014 was a great year for the autocross program

Highlights included a record attendance to our novice school, 8 points events including two wildly popular events at the NCCAR road course facility, and our best Jimmy V fundraiser event ever. The "Jimmy" event was a great occasion for us and Triad Sports Car Club to come together to remember a great friend and mentor that we lost in 2014, Jim Feinberg, as well as to raise money for a great cause. It was our 10th year raising money to fight cancer research, and to date we have raised over $50,000.

2015 is starting to shape up. We plan on having at least 8 events this year including not just one, but TWO autocross schools to help bring new participants into the sport. Our traditional novice school will be held March 28, and the women only "chick school" makes its return this year on May 16. Both events will be at Danville regional airport. Look for more details at motorsportsreg.com.

We hope to have the final calendar posted shortly, but events are already booked for February through May, with later dates still to be determined as we pursue new sites for the program. We are considering using Piedmont Dragway again, Fayetteville's Crown Coliseum, as well as making a return to Virginia Motorsports Park after many years away from there. As details firm up, we will post them on facebook, the forums, and of course, motorsportsreg.com.

Lastly, if you have been a part of the program for a while, and want to try your hand at course design, we need event chairs for upcoming events. We are always looking for creative designs. Contact autocross@thscc.com if you are interested or find the thread on the forums. We're gearing up for another great year!

RallyCross Report

2014 Review
Last year was an exciting year for rally cross; attendance was up; and we added a late summer event at VIR that was run in conjunction with the track program. At least two of our members drove in both.

We also ran on a 5/8 mile banked clay oval at the Fayetteville Motor Sports Park that was as sticky as asphalt in places and as slippery as glass in others. Those events were exciting, indeed. We even had a visit by Ezra Dyer of Car and Driver and Yahoo Auto who did a video article at one of those events. It can be seen at:
https://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/a-dirt-track-date-with-the-range-rover-evoque--british-speed--carolina-mud-150043673.html

Congratulations to the 2014 season point winners:

NO4 – 4-wheel drive cars running dedicated rally tires
Winner – Ray Metts
Second – Kevin Allen
Third – Sebastian Kokoszka

NO2 – 2-wheel drive, over 2.4L running dedicated rally tires

Winner (T) – Drew O’Neill

NU2 – 2-wheel drive under 2.4L running dedicated rally tires
Did not have a competitor that qualified for season championship points.

SO4 – 4-wheel drive, over 2.4L running street tires
Winner – Brett Murphy
Second – David Brown
Third – Brandon Creede

SU4 – 4-wheel drive under 2.4 L running street tires

Second – Drew Sheffield

SU2 – 2-wheel drive under 2.4L running street tires
Winner – Charlie Guthrie
Second – Pete Guthrie

2015 Rally Cross at a Glance
Next year we plan to run a full rally cross schedule (8 to 9 events) with events being currently planned for VIR, Wilson Fairgrounds and Fayetteville Motor Sports Park. We’re also holding a Rally-X novice/practice day in conjunction with our first event at Wilson on February 28-March 1. This would be a great opportunity for folks who are not familiar with rally cross to enter the sport.  Other locations may be added if we can find them and work out the details.

Car classes and rules will stay the same as last year.

We’re currently considering offering events at VIR in conjunction with the HPDE program similar to the Summer Sampler Event last September. We’re meeting with VIR later this month to firm up our plans for that venue. We’ll firm the schedule with other venues after that date.
