My wife found me a car lift for the garage. I need to make room to fit it. Will bring what I can to October club meeting.

Garage stuff
Two Michelin pilot sport's 295 /35/18, Three Michelin pilot sport's 265/40/17 with worn edges. Two years old (All $100, were $1,600 new)
1/2 ton sears floor jack, old and heavy, but still good ($10)
16 inch McCulloch electric chainsaw ($10)
14 inch McCulloch two cycle chainsaw ($10) Ran last time used. Will refund money if it doesn't start.
2X 12 ounce cans of Freon 12 one with leak detect (Free, priceless if you need some)
Thule bicycle roof rack with enough adapters for five bicycles, Rain Gutter mount. Adapters to other mounts still available. ($50)

Is anyone missing a lift? Mike's wife somehow just 'found' one.

I'll take the floor jack and 2 stroke chainsaw please. Are you coming to the meeting on Wed?

So what did the wife "find" for you?

It's a two post lift called a “Max Jax”. It's designed to fit in garage with a minimum of 8” clearance. http://www.maxjaxusa.com/ The take away is that it only lifts the car 48” so you have to do most of your work sitting on a rolling chair which I have. My wife's motivation to look came when I told her what the labor costs would be for changing the clutch on the Vette. The drive train and suspension from the engine back needs to be removed in order to change the clutch. Jerry Malone advised me to pay someone to change the clutch because it was next to impossible to do without a lift. COSTCO had a special that was $300 less than the going web price and the clutch labor covers 40% of the remainder. Best of all, I don't have to build a garage to house it. Vincent, my wife actually thinks that you're funny.

Rodney, I'll bring the chain saw and floor jack to the club meeting. BTW, it's a 1.5 Ton jack.

wow, I was thinking the other day I'd really like a 1/2 height lift for the garage. This "almost" fits the bill. There's no way I can permanently mount those lifts to the floor w/ my small garage. If this had some kind of portable support structure under it, I'd be all over this...

Wow, only 8" of clearance? That's one tiny car!

The ironic thing is that a 1/2 rise lift isn't any cheaper than a full rise one, but if you don't have clearance, Clarence, it's a moot point I guess.

It has wheels on each post and a separate control unit. Each post is held in place with 5 bolts through the floor. The bolts go into expansion nuts imbedded in the garage floor. When you don't need it, you can roll it into a corner. I'm going to have to rent a hammer drill. The other part that I like is that it's hydraulic instead of screw or chain drive.

Vincent, It was about $400 less than a full height lift without the COSTCO deal. I wouldn't expect it to be much cheaper than that as a full height lift has about the same number of parts. The real difference is mostly material cost. I only have 9 feet in my garage and was talking to people about building a garage. I think that Nancy figures that the difference in cost is hers or she wants me out of the house an in the garage. BTW, most of my work is changing tires and brakes, so the height works for me.

I've thought pretty seriously about one of these, but the lift height is limited. If I could sit in a chair and work under the car would be perfect.

Ah, I assumed it was a permanent mount setup. Being able to move is a huge plus. So this setup is good for 4" of concrete? I'm assuming that's a standard pour thickness for home garage floors.

I have a friend in CA that has a MaxJax and it was actually $200 more than my lift. I'm sure I'm biased, but IMO the whole "being able to move it" thing is mostly marketing. Most people who buy it for that reason hardly ever actually move theirs.

I can see that for those of us that only have the one parking garage, making this into a garage w/ temp lift for major projects and then being able to move the lift out of the way is very cool in my book.

Hey Michael -

I have a serious heavy duty hammer drill with a bunch of bits that I'll loan you in exchange for the electric chainsaw. Interested?
